What do I need?
We want your parcel to be delivered as soon as possible, so make sure it is properly packaged before collection. Remember, the courier who collects your parcels cannot provide packaging and may refuse to take any items unsuitable for transit.
You will need
- A printer, to print out your waybill. This is a label you will be able to download when you checkout, and it will also be emailed to you.
- Sellotape or glue to attach your waybill to the correct parcel.
- Suitable packaging for your items.
How to package your parcels
- Boxes should be sturdy and suitable for the secure transit of the item. If the parcel is wrapped in paper, or in a jiffy bag, please remember that they may be delivered under the weight of other parcels, so the contents themselves must be sturdy.
- Put fragile goods in the centre of a parcel; ensuring they don't touch the sides. Make sure the item is well cushioned with bubble wrap or recyclable polystyrene fragments.
- Ensure liquids are stored in leak-free containers, packed with a lightweight, strong, internal material and sealed with a plastic bag. Always remember that bad packaging may cause damage to surrounding items.
- Seal semi-liquids, greasy or strong-smelling substances with adhesive tape, then wrap in grease resistant paper to avoid damage to surrounding items.
- Place powders and fine grains in strong plastic bags, sealed and packed in a rigid box.
- Mark This Way Up for non-solid materials.
- Repack your gifts properly. Items sold in fragile or elaborate packaging may not be suitable for shipping.
- Use triangular tubes to pack rolled plans, maps and blueprints which must stay crease free.
- Protect your data discs, CDs, DVDs and tapes with soft cushioning material around each item.
- When shipping sharp items such as knives or scissors, ensure that you fully protect the edges and points with heavy cardboard.
- Always use cardboard dividers when sending flat, fragile material (eg. vinyl records).
- When re-using a box, remove all old labels and stickers. Ensure that the box is in good shape and suitable for transit.
Things to avoid
- Do not use fabric or cloth bags.
- Do not over-protect your parcel. Remember that all parcels may be opened by customs authorities.
- Do not use cellophane tape or rope to seal your parcel.
- Do not use Fragile or Handle with care labels as a substitute for careful packaging.
